Ark Eden Foundation delivers tangible environmental, social and financial improvements by working practically and creatively with thousands of people from all sections of Hong Kong society. In homes, the workplace, schools and the wider community we help to make the small changes that have a big impact on the things that matter.
Ark Eden Foundation's Community Action Teams reach out to communities by helping the physically, emotionally and mentally challenged, and the learning disabled through horticulture and animal therapy, and vocational skills training. Many elderly people have valuable outdoor and farming skills and traditional practices to share but no place share them. Disadvantaged youths rarely get a chance to convene with nature, thus missing out on the pleasures of the senses and the opportunity to develop a passion for the environment.
The Ark Eden Eco Teams are actively establishing Eco-Centres through restoration and conservation of Hong Kong's disused old and heritage buildings, villages and abandoned farms. Whole villages, ancestral halls, small temples and arable farmlands are disappearing from the landscape each passing year. Hong Kong also has more than 60 village schools lying vacant. These buildings can be renovated into new life as eco-centres and eco-lodges for the whole community.
Hillfires destroy great swathes of Hong Kong trees. The hills are litterally falling down from soil erosion, silting up rivers, causing flooding, thus the inevitable concreting of rivers, devastating the ecology of our lowland rivers and greatly impacting marine life. Ark Eden's Forests of Lantau Project is aggressively reforesting areas that have been devastated by fires and soil erosion. This year alone Ark Eden Foundation planted 1400 native Hong Kong saplings and we've established our own native tree nursery for next year's tree planting season.
