Every year from March to July Ark Eden dedicates its resources to our Forests of Lantau Project, an aggressive afforestation and reforestation project aimed at restoring, preserving and conserving Lantau's eco-system from the devastation of hill fires and landslides. In 2009 alone our Eco-Teams and volunteers planted 1400 native seedling trees in the mountains near Tun Hung Mei valley on Lantau.
Ark Eden has developed its own tree nursery to help with our reforestation efforts next season and the years to come. To enrich local plant diversity, native species such as Castanopsis fissa, Cinnamomum camphora, Gordonia axillaris, Liquidambar formosana, Machilus breviflora and Schima superba are grown.
Lantau provides roosting and feeding places for many rare wild animals that are iconic of Hong Kong: the elusive Chinese Muntjac Deer, also known as Barking Deer (Muntiacus reevesi) that loves to hide deep in the woods; the adorable Pallas's Tree Squirrel (Callosciurus erythraeus) that moves agilely on branches above; the graceful White-bellied Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster); the Indian Awl King (Choaspes benjaminii formosanus) that flutters around flowering shrubs; and the Wandering Glider (Pantala flavescens) that often rests on streamside pavilions. These and many more wonderful species need our forests as much as we do.
Please support the Forests of Lantau project with your donations or volunteer for tree planting projects.
