Volunteers
Ark Eden needs volunteers to help with our education and environment programmes.
We’re looking for people with a genuine interest in the environment, whether you’re a gap year student, a retired citizen, or you just want to take time out of your regular schedule to make a difference in very important environment projects, we would love to hear from you.
IAs an Ark Eden Eco-Team or Community Action Team member you will work five days a week from around 8.30am to 4.30pm helping students, the elderly, and the disadvantaged as an environmental educator or an environmental assistant.
We run an enormous variety of hands-on workshops at Ark Eden, designed to meet school curriculum and community needs, with a strong focus on environmental sustainability. You will gain intense training as a Team Leader and hands-on experience in environmental education in addition to running practical, fun programmes for youngsters.
Just a few of the projects you will work on include creating compost, shrimping in streams, buffalo conservation, identifying animal habitats and their preservation needs, setting up an eco-house, ecological restoration, how to “green” an office, as well as heritage preservation.
On days that we don’t have programmes running there is an endless amount to do. We have a farm. We have animals. We have new centres to renovate. We have thousands of trees to maintain. We have fruit and vegetables to harvest. It doesn’t sound very like Hong Kong at all, does it? But here we are, just a short ferry ride from the central business district!
The Ark Eden Foundation charity also provides opportunities to get involved with working with disadvantaged children, the elderly, helping run charity events, and working with major corporations in their efforts to go green.
That’ll look pretty good on a resume!
Ark Eden’s Role
You will be our guest. We will house you, feed you from our garden and local rural eating establishments, make sure you are safe, healthy and comfortable, and give you a bike to ride to get fit and keep up with us.
You will have your own room, three delicious meals each day and we’ll even have your laundry washed for you. We will pick you up from the airport, train station, bus depot, whatever, and of course, we will train you and give you the guidance you will need in unfamiliar surroundings. We’ll even hold your hand if you get homesick … but that usually doesn’t happen because there is just so much to do and see.
Length of stay
Ark Eden encourages our volunteers to join for a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of four months. If you really want to stay for longer and we really want you too as well, then we bend our rules.
How much will it cost?
It will cost you HK$2,000 a week which is $260 US or 153 sterling plus your airfare to get to us and whatever insurance you decide to take out.
